The biodegradable cellulose sponge that ships flat and pops up

A sponge that ships flat and pops up the second it gets wet. Under the tap it opens into a soft, thirsty cellulose sponge for dishes, counters, and spills, and it is all plant fiber instead of plastic foam. It wipes up messes without shedding microplastic, and it lasts months before it biodegrades.

Plastno Soak Sponge: pop-up cellulose dish sponge held in front of a kitchen sink and tiled backsplash

How it works

1. Grab. Take a flat sponge from the pack and run it under warm water. It pops up to full size in seconds.

2. Scrub. Wipe dishes, counters, or most hard surfaces. Cellulose is gentle on hands and finishes.

3. Rinse. Rinse well and air-dry between uses so it lasts longer.

Plant-based ingredients

Cellulose comes from plant fibers and biodegrades naturally when buried in soil or added to a backyard compost pile. It absorbs water like a regular sponge, handles daily kitchen use, and breaks down without shedding microplastics into waterways the way foam does.

Plastno Soak Sponge: biodegradable cellulose sponge in a 3-pack, plant-based and plastic-free

Why switch to a biodegradable cellulose sponge

A single foam sponge sheds microplastics into your sink and your food every time you wash. Multiply that by every kitchen, every week, every year. Plant-based cellulose gives you the same absorbency, a longer life, and none of the petroleum.

Before you ditch your plastic sponge

Do kitchen sponges shed microplastics?

Yes. A 2026 University of Bonn study measured what kitchen sponges shed. It found 0.68 to 4.21 grams of microplastics per person per year, depending on the sponge, and that sponges with less plastic shed far less. Plastno's biodegradable cellulose sponge has no plastic in it to shed. We compared seven plant-based sponges on that exact question. Here is what our sponges are made of.

How long do Plastno Soak Sponges last?

Each sponge lasts 2 to 4 months with daily use. To get the full life out of it, rinse it thoroughly after each use, wring it out, and let it air-dry. Boil it or run it through the dishwasher once a week to keep it fresh.

How should I care for Plastno Soak Sponges?

Boil it or run it through the dishwasher on the top rack to sanitize. When it wears out, the sponge is biodegradable. It is one layer of plant-based cellulose, so the whole sponge breaks down in a home compost pile. Not third-party certified. Bury it in soil and it leaves no plastic residue.

Is the Soak Sponge plastic-free?

Yes. The sponge itself is 100% plant-derived cellulose, with no polyurethane foam, no polyester, and no antimicrobial coatings. The 3-pack comes wrapped in kraft paper inside a kraft cardboard box you can put in your curbside recycling, with paper-based tape and water-based inks.

How is the Soak Sponge different from the Scrub Sponge?

The Soak Sponge is the soft, ultra-absorbent option for daily dish-washing, counters, and spills. The Scrub Sponge adds a firm loofah side for cookware and stuck-on grease. Many shoppers keep both on hand for a full plastic-free kitchen setup.
