The most widely recommended natural cleaner on the internet is vinegar. It is cheap, it is non-toxic, it is in every zero-waste guide going, and on granite or marble it is one of the worst things you can reach for.

Acid etches stone. Marble is calcium carbonate, so acid does not just dull the finish, it dissolves a microscopic layer of the surface. The mark that leaves is not dirt and it will not come off, because the stone itself has changed shape. Lemon juice does the same thing. So does a lot of what gets recommended as the sustainable alternative to commercial cleaners.

We sell sustainable cleaning products, and we would rather say this plainly than let you find out from a cloudy ring on a countertop: natural does not mean safe for every surface. Here is what actually works on granite and marble, and why they need different handling from the quartz most guides lump them in with.

Why granite and marble are a different job

Quartz is engineered. It is ground stone bound in resin, it is non-porous, and it never needs sealing.

Granite and marble are natural stone, cut from the ground. Both are porous, which means they absorb liquid, which means they are sealed at installation and need that sealer maintained. Everything about their care follows from that one fact. A spill does not sit on the surface waiting to be wiped, it starts soaking in.

Between the two, marble is the more delicate. Granite is largely quartz and feldspar and is reasonably acid-tolerant. Marble is calcium-based and etches from something as ordinary as a squeeze of lemon or a splash of wine.

Check whether your sealer is still working

Do this before you worry about any product, because it changes what you are dealing with.

Put a few drops of water on an inconspicuous part of the counter and leave it for around fifteen minutes. Wipe it away and look at the stone. If there is a dark patch where the water sat, the stone absorbed it and the sealer needs attention. If the stone looks unchanged, the sealer is doing its job.

Repeat this once or twice a year. Most granite wants resealing every one to three years depending on traffic, and marble somewhat more often. There is no cleaner that compensates for a failed sealer, which is why this is the first step rather than a footnote.

The daily routine

Wipe crumbs off dry first so you are not dragging grit across the surface. Then wipe with a pH-moderate cleaner and a soft cloth, and dry the whole surface rather than just the damp patch. Drying is what prevents water spots on stone, and on granite it also prevents the mineral haze that hard water leaves behind.

Spills matter more here than on quartz. Wine, oil, coffee, citrus and tomato should come up promptly rather than at the end of the evening, because on porous stone they are working their way in the whole time.

That is genuinely it. Granite and marble do not need polish or a shine restorer. Those products leave a film, and film on stone attracts more residue and dulls it further.

What to keep away from natural stone

  • Vinegar, lemon, and any acidic cleaner. Etches marble quickly and wears granite's sealer over time. This is the big one, because it is also the most-recommended natural hack.
  • Bleach. Can lighten stone and degrade the sealer.
  • Ammonia and strongly alkaline cleaners. High pH strips sealer faster than most people expect.
  • Abrasive powders, scouring pads, steel wool. Micro-scratches that read as a permanent dull patch.
  • Oil soaps and wax polishes. Build a film that traps grime.
  • Baking soda used as a scrub. Fine as a brief paste on a specific stain, but not as a regular abrasive on polished stone.

The rule underneath all of that: stone wants the middle of the pH scale and nothing gritty.

Etching and staining are different problems

Worth separating, because the fixes are not the same and people waste effort treating one as the other.

A stain is something absorbed into the stone, usually darker than the surrounding surface. It sits below the finish. Oil, wine and coffee cause these.

An etch is physical damage to the surface, usually lighter or duller than the surrounding stone, and it often looks like a water ring. Acid causes these.

If a mark is darker, you have a stain and it can usually be drawn out. A poultice, meaning a paste of baking soda and water spread over the mark, covered with plastic wrap and left for several hours to overnight, pulls absorbed liquid back out. It often takes more than one attempt. For oil specifically, some people use acetone in place of water in the paste.

If a mark is lighter or looks like a dull ring, you have an etch, and no cleaner will fix it. Light etching on marble can sometimes be improved with a marble polishing powder. Anything significant is a job for a stone restoration professional. This is the reason the vinegar advice matters so much: staining is usually recoverable, etching often is not.

Granite versus marble, briefly

Granite is the more forgiving of the two. It handles heat well, resists scratching, and tolerates a brief acid exposure without immediate etching, though repeated exposure still wears the sealer. Treat it carefully but not anxiously.

Marble needs more attention. It etches from ordinary kitchen acids, scratches more easily, and shows wear faster, particularly in a polished finish. Honed marble hides etching better than polished marble because it is not reflecting light off a perfectly smooth surface. Many people with marble kitchens eventually accept a lived-in patina, which is a reasonable position, but it should be a decision rather than a surprise.

The stone-care aisle problem

Look at what the category wants you to own: a granite cleaner, a marble cleaner, a stone polish, a sealer, a separate quartz spray, plus a glass cleaner because none of the above do windows.

Some of that is real. Sealer is a genuine product doing a genuine job, and nothing replaces it. But the cleaners are largely the same idea repackaged per surface, because a bottle labeled for your specific countertop sells better than one that quietly works on all of them. The outcome is a cupboard of half-used plastic, and there is nothing sustainable about owning four cleaners where one would do.

The honest version of the argument: you need a sealer, and you need one cleaner that is genuinely formulated for stone. Not five.

What formulated for stone actually means

It comes down to pH and residue. A cleaner has to be alkaline enough to lift grease, but not so alkaline that it strips sealer, and it must not be acidic at all. Then it has to rinse away rather than leave a film, because film on stone is what dulls it.

Sodium carbonate does the grease-cutting, and alone it would sit near pH 11, too harsh for sealed stone. Tartaric acid brings it down into a safe range. Two mild plant-derived surfactants let it sheet across the surface and rinse clean instead of clinging, and sodium phytate binds hard-water minerals so it does not leave spots as it dries. The tablets are formulated for sealed countertops, stovetops, sealed wood, and sealed stone including marble, granite, quartz, travertine and terrazzo. One tablet plus 16 ounces of warm water in a refillable bottle makes a full bottle of cleaner, so the bottle stays and only the tablet gets replaced. Allow 20 to 30 minutes for it to dissolve fully.

The limits, stated plainly: sealed stone only, and no cleaner substitutes for maintaining a sealer. Not formulated for floors, and not for glass or mirrors.
